Levels of Electric Car Chargers
There are three different levels of EV chargers, each with varying charging speeds and applications:
- Level 1: These can be supported by a 120V household outlet. They provide the slowest charging speed, typically two to four miles of range per hour. This level is best suited for plug-in hybrid vehicles or those with smaller battery capacities.
- Level 2: These require a 240V dedicated circuit and offer faster charging speeds compared to Level 1 systems. Typically, they add 10-60 miles of range per hour of charging. For most EV owners, level 2 chargers are ideal.
- Level 3 (DC fast chargers): These are the fastest options available. They can add up to 250 miles of range per hour of charging. Level 3 chargers are a common option for public charging stations.
Can Your House Accommodate an EV Charger?
In most cases, installing an EV charger at your home should be possible.
However, there are several factors you must consider before committing to an installation:
- Your home’s electrical capacity: If you have a newer home with a larger electrical panel and wiring, you can likely move ahead seamlessly with an installation. On the other hand, homes with aging or outdated electrical infrastructure may need upgrades and other modifications.
- Garage/parking space availability: You may live in a condominium or another building that does not have a garage or driveway for an EV charger. In these cases, we can work with you to explore your options for harnessing the power of at-home charging.
- Local building codes: Often, permits are necessary for EV charger installations. We can help you obtain them, ensuring your installation is code-compliant.
